Ok, I’m not gonna lie. Today’s strip was just an excuse to draw a kickboxing kiwi. Why? Cause kiwis are awesome and adorable. They are equal parts hedgehog and bird, which essentially makes them the best animal ever in my books. Those cute, useless little wings! Those awkward stompy feet!!! I could go on for hours!!
But fear not, Dustin and Ravenia fans! We’ll be getting back to their first date on Monday! Less adorable birds, more adorable first date awkwardness!

…
Now I’m going to be smiling all day. Thank you!
William McDuff Says:
Have you seen the short film called ‘Kiwi!’ on YouTube? Kinda sad, but awesome.
Nojh Says:
Is there a video of this kickboxing kiwi somewhere? I totally want to see this.
MerchManDan Says:
….must not…create desktop….out of last panel….
Snowfire Says:
I live in New Zealand, land of the Kiwi.
I’m a guy but I feel like making happy dolphin noises about this.
Clinton the Trekkie Says:
The kickboxing Kiwi is whom the Kiwi bard would sing songs about, right?
Hurlbut Says:
Can we get a link to that article?
Ellimist Says:
Nojh: Considering they’re nocturnal and relatively rare in the wild, I doubt there’ll be one around. Never seen one out in the bush, and I live in NZ.
Alina: This comic made me grin like Abbie in panel 2
Gero Says:
I’d also love to see the article. If the Kiwi is about to be saved, then we just need to teach the Kakapo some Kung-fu, to make Douglas Adams happy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kakapo The Kakapo is the other major NZ bird that is on the verge of extinction because of the rats and stoats. They’re more like ground-parrots. Douglas Adams wrote a book “Parrots, the universe and everything” about them, and here is his TED talk http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/douglas_adams_parrots_the_universe_and_everything.html
Simon Says:
Our national symbol is hardly the most heroic of birds, but that fourth panel is just awesome…
Oh, and seconding the request for a link to the article Abbie is reading.
Jack Faire Says:
Hey if you can’t use your web comic to every once in awhile through up something cute and awesome then what is the bloody point of having a web comic!
Jack Faire Says:
*sighs* Okay no I am not a moron I know it’s throw not through that I was going for but you know what it’s Saturday and not even 6 AM yet get off my back ;p
Rave Says:
Where’d you get the hedgehog idea from? It doesn’t really fit kiwis at all. Interesting fact: Most New Zealanders have never handled a kiwi let alone seen one in person. That’s how rare they are. As for their adaption… eh, stoats will kill roosters and owls. Kiwi don’t have a chance. But their numbers are very gradually growing, they’ve reclaimed a number of islands for sanctuaries.
Simon Says:
@Rave – actually, they *are* a bit like hedgehogs, when you think about it. They’re mostly nocturnal, and go wandering though the undergrowth, poking their nose around hunting for insects. Unfortunately, the kiwi is considerably more edible to predators… it’d be nice if you saw them snuffling around in the suburbs like you do hedgehogs…
standgale Says:
I see the kiwi-hedgehog connection – they’re both round-bummed and totally ridiculous and cute!
TNGJester Says:
In case anyone was still interested in looking at the Kiwi short on youtube here is the link. I do believe this was the one William was talking about.
