Not-So-Tiny Superheroes

So,  continuing on in the superhero vein, here are some sketches that I’m sure some of you have been waiting for!

These are some very rough designs for Sarah and Abbie’s hypothetical super-powered alter egos. (For those who have asked I fully plan on having a superhero storyline at some point. However, there’s quite a few games running right now, and just like in real life, I’ve got to end one of them before I can start another. So, don’t despair, but it might be a bit of a wait!)

To the surprise of no one, Abbie is a speedster. I knew that from the get-to, and so her design came together very quickly.

I was less sure about Sarah’s powers. The lower right sketch of her is more of a strong, invulnerable type hero, a la Wonder Woman. The top right design, which I quite like, is a little more dark and mysterious and a lot more sexy.  I imagine that she probably shots bolts of energy from her hands, as the cape and fishnets  combo give her a bit of a dark sorceress vibe.

However, I don’t have a name for either of them. And so, oh mighty legion of  Weregeeks, I turn the floor over to you! Got a suggestion for one or both of them? Let me know in the comments!

    Abbie is Rabid Squirrel :P
She could team up with Grace from El Goonish Shive

Abbie could be Rapido de Crazy and Sarah could be Psionica

Abbie – Hyper-Girl, Hyper, Amp, Blitzball, Speedfreek (not a typo)
Sarah – (going from Sorceress Supreme idea) Tempest, Lady Scion, Dr. Lore, Ms. Mystery, Elle Dritch (Eldritch, get it?), Lady Eldritch.

    List goes on and on.

They should play Savage Worlds – Necessary Evil, Sarah looked good as the shadowy tentacly vampire-lady. Abbie could also have rapid teleport (Bamf!) and a tail…

I suggest “Zip Line” for Abbie.
It’s hard to place a name to Sarah though, since her powers aren’t 100% certain. I’ll have to just go ahead and agree with Takley, Psionica sounds pretty cool.

    Hyper Activity.

Or if you aim for a more pun focused thing:

    Hyper Abtivity.

  10. William McDuff Says:

Hmm. Sarah seems like someone who knows her classics. Maybe something old school inspired, like “The Darkness”, riffing off “The Shadow”.

Abbie, on the other hand, is slightly insane… Hmm. Instant Message! She’d use the internet theme as an excuse to spout memes. *WHACK!* “Play him off, keyboard cat!”

  11. AB Says:

    Abby: No Breaks!!!
Sarah: Lady Loquatios (not entirely sure of the spelling on that one, sorry)

  12. Coyote Says:

For Abbie I’d suggest something that describes both her personality and speed. Tweak the Streak or Tweak-streak comes to mind. Which is also a common acronym of Top Speed and Top Secret. Perhaps hinting at an origin story. perhaps even a cute little logo of a speedy angled T and a lighting streak S.
Sarah I agree has a nice old school streak but would try to be both classic and unique. So she may go with something like Mystica or perhaps some sorceress from mythology even though all the good ones have already been taken in comics.

  14. Anna Says:

I second McDuff – Instant Message is perfect for Abbie!

For Sarah, since she kind of has that “dark sorcerous” vibe in the top pic, maybe something like ‘Trance’ or ‘Phantasm’

  15. Knightaxe Says:

When i saw the upper sarah i first thoght
“Witch” of some kind so…. “The Witch of Seven Winds” Aka “The Witch”

And a speedster Abbie, i have no idea of …
maybe a super long name, that she can pronoce really quickly?

“However, there’s quite a few games running right now, and just like in real life, I’ve got to end one of them before I can start another.”

What? There is no such thing as too much gaming! (Not to mention, that’d be “there’re” not “there’s”. Super Grammar Pest to the rescue. up, up and away!)

  17. Munchlord Says:

I agree with William that Abbie with an internet theme name and a bag full of meme puns would be awesome, and it’d fit her OOC character to name her IC character as such.

I feel a little awkward with the name “The Darkness” because as opposed to a Shadow, which is a single thing, Darkness is inherently a more general state or widespread effect, meaning that it invokes a name-wise feel of something not quite human. IMO, the name is more suitable to some sort of comsuming demon or alien species or similar. If we want that theme, “Nocturna” might be a better fit.

  18. Adam Hensler Says:

For Sarah, I’d say something like Lady Celestia sounds fitting. For Abbie, I think Velocity.

  19. Bluegeek Says:

Abbie is Hypergirl, of course. If you can’t use that, then call her SugarRush and make her powers fueled by sugar.

Sarah’s harder. I’ll have to give that some more thought.

    Posted April 29th, 2011 at 8:47 am
  20. Geeksquared Says:

I think Sarah’s powers should be of the mind-controlly seductive type,SHe’d definately play a villain type. She just needs a sinister high collar on the cape and a more angular mask.

    Posted April 29th, 2011 at 9:12 am
  21. Thornir Says:

Clearly Abbie’s hero would be HyperActive (her kryptonite is Ritalin)

For Sarah, I would suggest, especially for the upper image, she would choose the name Intarsia.

    Posted April 29th, 2011 at 9:22 am
  22. Abbie is…HASTE!!

    Sarah is…MYSTERIEUSE!!

    Together, they are…HASTE & MYSTERIEUSE!!!

  23. Bluegeek Says:

I like your suggestion for Abbie better than mine, Thornir. :)

    Posted April 29th, 2011 at 9:50 am
  24. KenderBryant Says:

Yeah, I can definitely see Abbie as a speedster. I think Sarah should be like Raven (of Teen Titans). Strange powers, though I don’t think she would be as serious as Raven. For the boys: Joel = telepath, Dustin = mage (like Magik or Dr. Strange), Mark = Strength, Agility, Invulnerability. If you added Katie, Darren, Victor and Talking Guy… Katie = Reality Warping (like Proteus or Franklin Richards), Darren = Strength, Invulnerability, Agility, Victor = Living Vampire (Morbius), Talking Guy = Speed.

    Posted April 29th, 2011 at 9:51 am
  25. Bluegeek Says:

I’ve got one for Sarah. The dark mysterious heroine could be called “Allusion”.

    Posted April 29th, 2011 at 9:56 am
  26. Trik Says:

I vote LAb Rat for Abbie – Always in search of the big cheese, as fast as possible.

As for Sarah, I put forward Draíochta – It’s Gaelic for magic!

@William McDuff – Nice idea, but I reckon Scott Kurtz already has meme powered superheroes covered with LoLBat and his sidekick

  27. rb Says:

upper: “The countess” – easy, memorable, and has some air of danger
lower: “GG, that geek gal”. Powers include unlimited wisecracking and knowing more than you about every comic and anime you like. And turning every male hetero character deployed over to yaoi.

    Posted April 29th, 2011 at 10:31 am
  28. rb Says:

of course, she would be a evil enemy, then…

  29. Foxfier Says:

Hypera? “Sugar Rush”? Adrenna Lynn? Wallbouncer, whose ability shatters the fourth wall?

    Hm… magic… classic… “Dark Belle”? “Hell’s Belle”? (sounds more like a nickname, man-of-steel style) Will’o'whisp? Kitsuni Bi?

I can see ANY of these guys going to mythology for their names; the TV Tropes Yokai page is great.
    ( http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Youkai if that doesn’t work)

Example: Nekomata, whose powers of illusion feed the dark rumors that she dabbles in powers from beyond the grave!

Raiju, whose lightning speed and animal reflexes cannot be less than supernatural!

    Posted April 29th, 2011 at 10:43 am
  30. Andy Says:

Sarah is easily something like “Madame Shadow”. I think that her powers would actually tend towards hypnosis/mental confusion.

Abbie is a great speedster. Why not (to the facepalms of Mark and Joel) name her “Squee”? Because you know she would.

    Posted April 29th, 2011 at 10:43 am
  31. I was going to suggest combining Flash with Abbie, but that would be Flabbie, and that would be wrong.

    Posted April 29th, 2011 at 11:56 am
  32. Pravikun Says:

Hmm. Lesse now. For Abbie I’d suggest Flicker. Because when she’s moving all you see of her is a flicker. Alternately, I’d suggest perhaps Quicksilver, and have her costume be metallic silver in color.

As for Sarah, if you go the sexy mysterious look with her you could try something like Prestige, if you wanted to be subtle about things. Mistress Cosmos, since wielding magic would make the cosmos bend to her will and all.

If you wanted to go the invulnerable look a la traditional superhero you could give her alterego a name like Lady Magnificent, or perhaps, given Sarah’s love of books and reading, The Grande Dame. I could see Sarah making a super hero character like that.

    Posted April 29th, 2011 at 1:19 pm
  33. eavatar Says:

I think Sarah could be a Psionic with telepathy, telekinesis as offensive power and some illusions and she could use Savant as her heroine name

Abbie is the easier to figure. A velocist and probably a pain in the ass for anyone. Her name could be Xpeed

    Posted April 29th, 2011 at 1:37 pm
  34. José Says:

It would be awesome if they could play “Necessary Evil”…imagine that! Abby and Sarah as supervillians!!!! mwahahaha…

    Posted April 29th, 2011 at 2:48 pm
  35. Samaliel Says:

For the dark and mysterious Sarah, I’d quite see her using dark force fields, under the name Pitchblack.

As for Abbie the speedster, I quite like Flicker, actually.

    Posted April 29th, 2011 at 2:58 pm
  36. Abbie’s name should have something to do with caffeine, I don’t have any more specific thoughts on that, but Sarah should be Ravenstorm; it evokes the whole mysterious and sexy thing, combined with an indeterminate implication of great power.

    Posted April 29th, 2011 at 4:10 pm
  37. James Says:

    Abbie’s Superhero name: Velocity

Fishnet & Cape Sarah’s Superhero name: Madam Enigma

Super-strong Superhero Sarah’s name: Fervor, the Superpowered Fangirl

  38. Randomgeek Says:

I agree that Sarah should be the evil, mind control type. I like Wallbouncer for Abbie, and Sarah should be The Cosmic Shadow. Also, what if Mark led the campaign for once? That would be an interesting twist.

    Posted April 29th, 2011 at 5:02 pm
  39. AwfulMatt Says:

    I like Flicker also.

    Posted April 29th, 2011 at 5:10 pm
  40. zmortis Says:

I would combine SpeedsTer Abbie to make – STAbbie (as a play against the typical speedster naming schemes).
Sarah is more of a challenge, but going for the “super” Sarah character she could use Saraphim!

    Posted April 29th, 2011 at 6:18 pm
  41. Rowan Says:

Abbie definately needs ‘blitz’ somewhere in the name.

    Posted April 29th, 2011 at 6:27 pm
  42. Link2liam Says:

I myself have an appreciation for speedsters, so I will say that ‘instant message’ would be cool, but it’s too close to ‘E-male’ from a powerpuff girls episode. Velocity is a good fall back, but it lacks the wit of some others. ‘Stabbie’ just isn’t trying.
maybe something about her costume, a distinctive color she wears. maybe she was bit by a radioactive hummingbird and ‘sugarrush’ know has a backround story.

    Posted April 29th, 2011 at 7:24 pm
  43. WyrmPilot Says:

I think Samaliel’s suggestion for Sarah is the most interesting (of those appropriate to her actual persona), although zmortis’s has strong merit.

Abbie should be the Red Bull Squirrel (because “Hammy” is too subtle a reference).

    Posted April 29th, 2011 at 7:47 pm
  44. writemynamehere Says:

Abbie – “Rabidity”, often misheard as “Rapidity” (recommend poisoned slashing, or just slashing, but knowing her love of Ninjas…)

Sarah – “Black Silk Dahlia” – a lot of syllables and by the time they say her name they wind up beguilled.

    Posted April 29th, 2011 at 8:12 pm
  45. never_again_broken Says:

    Sarah- Ms. Estry (mystery)
    Abbie-Velox (latin for quick)

  46. Syncline Says:

    Channeling Champions powers…..
Shockwave – Abbie Black Lotus – Sarah

    Posted April 30th, 2011 at 12:42 am
  47. You could have Abby go old-school to bug the Cthulhu players and modify ‘haste’ to Hastur…. just watching Dustin and Joel squirm each time her name was spoken could work for a running gag… works really well if the downstairs group interrupts as well. As to Sarah, use both costumes- Heroic super ‘luck’ NPC (she’s running this game) is the cover for the true plot twist villain, (“Delve-Starada”= deep delver, or walker of the shadows [or cracks in the world]) magic based perception altering (which she uses to be her impossible luck in alter ego form.) Heroic alter ego- Lady Chevalier and making the group stick to the French pronunciation.

Abby – Interceptor (Supergirl was called this in a now-defunct Alt. Timeline)
    Sarah – Whiplash or Backlash

  50. Zavatar Says:

    Abby: Sugar Rush, Blitzer
    Sarah: Madame Mystic, Mysteria

    Posted May 1st, 2011 at 9:19 am
  51. L Silver Says:

Nothing, alas for Sarah, perhaps Noir or La Noir (Night in French)

For Abby…I can see her as Frantic Ferret….

    Posted May 1st, 2011 at 5:53 pm
  52. Sarah could be some sort of Super-Scribe. Probably has been done, but she can pull what she reads into reality. Always keeps certain books and scrolls on hand. Also would have to know the locations of every libary and book store in the city.

    Posted May 1st, 2011 at 8:32 pm
  53. Shush Says:

    Abbie-GALE. Runs like a hurricane.

Sarah? Umm… Vampira, Elvira’s biggest fan.

    Posted May 2nd, 2011 at 7:15 am
  54. von Corax Says:

Given Abbie’s reaction to sugar and caffeine, obviously she should be named “Buzz.”

    Posted May 2nd, 2011 at 9:29 pm
  55. Werenorm Says:

    For Sarah’s super: Chromia
[Going with the idea of her as a nigh invulnerable-type (see wikipedia article: Chromium#Applications)]
Chromia’s civilian ID: Kathleen Lonsdale [or maybe she's just a native of the town of Lonsdale... :) ] (see wikipedia article on Lonsdaleite)

    Origin? Struck by a meteor!
Nemesis: The Alchemist (every warrior needs a wizardly opponent)

    For Abbie’s super: Zaki
[Derived from the name of the founder of the company which produces the perfect food (see wikipedia article: Ezaki_Glico)]
Zaki’s civilian ID: Halima Omian Lorentz (from Dr. Tachyon, of the Wild Cards stories, and Hendrik Lorentz [see wikipedia article on Lorentz_factor]
    Origin? Ate irradiated candy!
Nemesis: The Monster with 21 Faces, of course…

And I second José’s excellent idea of having them play “Necessary Evil”!

Enefess (say it out loud with an English accent – NfS – Need for Speed) and Allura – something mysterious and alluring, relating to her vamp persona.

    Posted May 3rd, 2011 at 7:27 pm
  57. Lurker From Beyond Says:

First thing that crossed my mind when I saw Abbie: “QuickTime”. It would let her toss in tons of internet puns and memes.
