Hey everyone! I’m posting Friday’s sketch a little bit early to give me some time to catch up after all of my recent travel. It is SO strange being back home again after three months away in Saskatchewan, capped off by a weekend down in Phoenix for Phoenix Comicon. I keep expecting to have to pack up and leave again at a moment’s notice, but am *extremely* glad that I don’t need to go anywhere.
However, while I had the most noble intentions of jumping right back into the swing of things today, the strain of travel finally caught up with me and I spent most of the day napping, unpacking, and getting used to the whole idea of being home. (I have rooms!! With my stuff in them!! And I don’t need to live out of a suitcase anymore! Oh, joy of joys!!!*)
Today’s sketch is one I did at Phoenix Comicon, hence the obligatory phoenix. Sunday was my unofficial ‘sketch day’, and I got to spend most of the day drawing people’s commissions. A few guys kept coming back and asking me to draw stranger and stranger things, which I always love. (Seriously, when else do you get the chance to draw a rabid hobbit?) Thanks for being awesome, Phoenix-ites!
And now, I go to collapse and spend a glorious, restful night in my own bed!
*Also, the hedgehogs seemed to have missed me as much as their little insectivore minds were capable. When they smelled me, they both proceeded to lick as much of my hands as they could reach. D’aww! (Also, eww.)

Alphieus Says:
Ah crap. You were at the Phoenix Comicon? DANGIT! Being in Tucson, I was thinking about going, but decided not to because I hadn’t seen any posts from peoples like you and others that they’d be there.
Damn. Next year though I suppose.
Randomgeek Says:
Hmm… A rabid hobbit eh? What if there is a disease in D&D and you are DMing and it is similar to rabies so when the adventurers go to find an antidote for it it is guarded by a halfling (hobbit) with the disease and the players ask what they look like? Yay for rabid hobbits!
Alondro Says:
Phoenix Rising + Falcon Punch? ;D
gnrrrg Says:
That’s what LoTR did wrong. Carrying the ring shouldn’t have made Frodo feel weak and old, it should have turned him into a rabid hobbit.
Greenbandit Says:
Phoenicians.
DarkMyste Says:
Oh my, that birdy look nice and is it smiling at us{ not by the beak but by the look of its eyes it seem happy to flame us}
love the artwork and the comic, my first post!
~goes back to lurking like romulan warship ever so ready to fire, its lasers of gleee! heh
Jolly Says:
Oh poop! You were down here for Phoenix Comicon and I missed you? Oh well, I was running D&D all weekend at the con. Anyways, I hope our city was most welcoming!
Gryphion Says:
Again, you make me very, very happy. I love your avian sketches, particularly the ones done in association with traditional mythological birds, like gryphions and Phoenix (and, though I’m probably one of the few that would include them amongst the birds, dragons.)
dr pepper Says:
Ah, i was wondering why a phoenix would look like a cardinal. You were actually *in* Phoenix when you drew it. Cardinals are one of the few things i liked about the time i spent in Tucson, unfotunately, i was unable to smuggle some out when i returned to California,
WyrmPilot Says:
Gryphion — you might want to investigate David Eddings’ description of a dragon in his series The Malloreon — however, to get nit-picky, while a wyvern could be a bird I would remind you that all birds have four limbs (not six), so the classic European mythical dragon could not be a bird.
However, for further reading, may I suggest this:

Gryphion Says:
WyrmPilot —
For the most part, I agree that the classical dragon is not a bird, though it does display avian qualities. My personal preference when world building is to create another class in which to place my mythological birds that display the properties of mammals, reptiles and birds. As for the six limbs, since none of the creatures that dragons or gryphs resemble have more then the traditional four, I either rebuild them to fit the norm (either removing forelegs or wings.) or explain them away as “magical.” Science begins to fail us if we pursue the classification too hard and rigidly.
Thanks for the book reviews; I’ll add them to my list after I get done with my current stack.
Dragonfodder Says:
I’ve been playing far too much Gamma World, cause my first thought before reading the comments was a Pyrokinetic Hawkoid character.
Mychyl Says:
Now I /really/ wish I’d been able to make the trip up from Tucson.
Ah well, there’ll be other times, preferably ones where I have money to afford attending… and cosplay… and merch… and and and…
ExcaliburBlade Says:
The sketch strangely looks like a NPC my GM had my character fight.
It was his idea of a big boss fight for my Heroes Unlimited Character but I was lucky and rolled a series of Crits and the NPC didn’t beat my AC. It was a good fight.
Ted Says:
Hi Alina. When I told my wife what I was laughing at she thought I said a “rabbit hobbit.” Sounds ominously cute to me. Do you dare…?
MerchManDan Says:
Oh jeez, Pimp Yoda?? That is not right at all.
evilmike1154 Says:
i had as much fun watching you crack up while sketching those, im glad you got through it though, i couldnt be any happier with how they turned out, and now ive got a whole year to come up with even wierder crap, i hope your up for it, lol. and oh yea, my buddy totally has that bro-nie on his fridge and up on his facebook! you kick ass, thanks again
Shawn Says:
You realize that’s a female Pazuzu, right?
