I have a confession to make – I enjoy finding the biggest, scariest monsters from the Monster Manual and drawing them as cute, tiny, cuddly beasties. It’s a sickness. (I was going to scan in my chibi Terrasque, but I seem to have misplaced it… Might have to redraw it in order to continue this series of sketches.)
For some reason, the tiny, ruff-and-tumble looking owlbear is my favorite to draw, though the evil displacer kitty is a close second. It’s so cute! And it will eat your face!!

FSilvermane Says:
I think I would be more scared of your versions than the MM versions,…lol. Kinda follows the whole “he is a harmless looking short old bald man in a robe carrying a walking stick” that becomes”he is a small leaping flurry of blows that whoops me” ideal,….
Kaspi Says:
You’ve done it, the Owlbear and the Displacer Beast are the standard cute, that you want to cuddle instead of fighting aren’t that bad, but to be able to make even the Gelatinous Cube cute – my mind’s broken now
Robin Bobcat Says:
Displacer Kitten is actually located a few inches off the screen.
Aerrigad Says:
PLEASE say that you’re going to put the displaced kitty on a t-shirt! I would love to frighten my group even further with the mind-blowing combination of geek, cute, and evil…
Osk Says:
an Owl-Teddy-Bear, Displacer Kitten and a Gelatinous Glomp?
well, one of my favorites are always Rust Monster, Bulette and those spark lizards, forgot the name for a moment, Shocker Lizards I think, but they look kinda cute anyway, so no work there. Anyone saying Pikachu is looking for a one way trip in its digestive tracks
I actually once had a party go down in a dungeon/cave complex to capture beasts and magical creatures alive, for an underground fortress under constuction that needed beasties for traps. Why dont players like rust monsters? Maybe an idea for the future. Players panic when facing one, even if they can take it out easily from a distance. So much fun having the Tank cower behind the archer, “protect me!”
Stavros Tsiakalos Says:
Please say you’ll do a mini series based around the adventures of chibi owlbear and his friends (displacer kitty etc)
Hornet Says:
Displace kitty is awesome and sassy.
Brent Says:
I would love to second whichever motion gets these on a t-shirt, button or fridge magnet! Because I will buy all the stuff!
Davyd Says:
Oh, the Owl-bear is awesome. I want a toy of that now!
Urabyfirst Says:
I second the toy motion! A good friend of mine just discovered that he is gonna be a Dad, and I want to get his kid a Displacer Kitty plushy!
Selera Says:
OMG! I want the displacer kitty as a plushy! A tee-shirt would work too.
Timber Says:
I’m not usually a huge fan of sketch Fridays, but these are adorable.
Q. Pheevr Says:
Ookpikbear!
Threetailfox Says:
want displacer kitty
Rosy the Cat Says:
Baby Moonkin! Even cuter then the in-WoW pet version!
– Rosy
Buster Says:
The gelatinous cube makes me think of a big block of tofu which in itself is possibly scarier than a gelatinous cube to me.
Has one of these been done for a shambling mound yet? That would be interesting to see.
AJ Says:
For a moment I saw the first one and thought “who would give pedobear wings?” Then I read and all made sense.
gnrrrg Says:
Displacer kitty may be evil, but it’s no match for Mr. Mittens Q. Deathbringer.
And before I read Alina’s description of what was being drawn, I thought the gelatin cube was some sort of toaster.
random geek Says:
These have to be on a T-shirt. I see their futures. Plush toys, T-shirts, magnets, nuclear rockets(???) and miniseries.
Jamming Says:
That Owlbear looks a bit like Kon (the stuffed Lion) from Bleach Anime.
Skulleigh Says:
OMG, I have to get out my Monster Manual and do some of my own versions. What a fun idea! I love the gelatinous cube!
Becky Says:
Cutest sickness EVER. Squeeee!
Harrow Says:
These are fabulous! I need a happy cuddly Otyugh to eat smelly stuff in my compost bucket, without trying to kill anyone who tries to empty the bucket. As well as the pun comics, you should consider including more adorable abominations in your story interludes.
vash_ts Says:
Hey! did you ever draw a Witch from Left 4 dead?
you really should… ^^
NeoDarklight Says:
…Why does that tentacle cat thing make me think of Jaspersprite from Homestuck?
Brillig Says:
Awww… gelly wants to give everyone huggles!
(Seriously, a friendly gelatinous cube would be much worse than a normal one! It’d follow people everywhere trying to make friends.)
Jenny Islander Says:
Holy schnikeys, I would pay cash money for one of these little guys. My husband the DM likes mind flayers because they suck out people’s brains. Are you doing commissions? I am looking for something unique for his birthday in late December. Please PM me at river beauty all one word at hotmail dot com.
Beardmonkey Says:
I vote for a Owl-Teddy Plushy.
That thing’s so adorable I want to snuggle the shit out of it :V
sillymagpie Says:
Oh ho! Because you’ve drawn that, you really must see this: http://youtu.be/4r577ytYTZM
Israel Says:
I can has Nightwalker.
MerchManDan Says:
I suppose a chibi vargouille or stirge are out of the question.
Southern Dixie Lady Says:
I do not know if you play Pathfinder, but there is actually a spell that turns magical beasts and beasts into their baby forms! My DM has actually promised that he is going to work something in just so I get a chance to use it!!!! Nothing better than a charging owlbear turning into a “chickcub”? What do you call a baby owlbear anyway?
SilverLion Says:
@Southern Dixie lady
WHICH BOOK IS THAT IN? I’ve got the Player’s Guide, the Beastiary , Beast 2, Adv. PG, GM Guide and Ultimate Magic. I need to look more thoroughly through UM, but a friend currently has it. I need to get it back from her.
xoer Says:
these are a good companion to James Stowe’s DND for dad’s
http://jamesstowe.blogspot.com/search/label/DND%20for%20Dads
Wissereth Says:
Chibi D&D? With displacer kitten? Oh Yessssssss please do a comic like that preeety pleeease!(Makes big wet puppy eyes and a begging pose)
MerchManDan Says:
@SilverLion I’m pretty sure it’s in Ultimate Combat, because I remember reading about it and finding it utterly hilarious. If I recall correctly, a druid casts it on her animal companion and any enemy who attacks the cute-ified creature must make a Will save. Success means the enemy attacks normally; failure means the enemy is overcome with guilt for thinking about hurting something so adorable and must attack something else.
