This sketch is pretty random, but it has a cute story behind it that I just had to share.
At Emerald City, I was asked if I could draw “something kind of weird”. I said yes, and was expecting to hear something about ninja Cthulhu fighting pirate godzilla (which I’ve drawn before), or time-travelling Abe Lincoln fighting robots (ditto). Instead, I was asked if I could draw a Ninja Pirate King.
“You see,” the lady said, “I have this niece who thought that pirates meant unicorns. So, when we announced that we were having a pirate-themed reception for our wedding, she was REALLY excited. Imagine, all the grown-ups dressed as UNICORNS! It’s a little girl’s dream.”
Her niece was a little flabbergasted to find everyone dressed with hooks and peglegs instead of flowing manes and horns, but apparently took to the change quite well, and even dubbed her uncle “the King Unicorn.”
Hence, the sketch, which was for her niece. I’m not sure I made the unicorn king-y enough, but that’s definitely a pirate unicorn.

MerchManDan Says:
Unicorns = Pirates? That is a very confused little girl.
ranthoron Says:
Oh, to me it looks royal, but not kingly. You missed the royal beard!
Robin Bobcat Says:
I too am wondering as to what sort of miscommunication would result in salty buccaneers being conflated with horned equines…
As for the kingly beard, its possible it’s not a ‘full’ unicorn.. The tail is not of the tufted variety, for example. Got the hooves right, tho. I’ve personally always envisioned unicorns as being a sort of half-horse, half-antelope situation, especially the classic descriptions as opposed o modern ‘we put a horn on a horse’ variety.
Annatar Says:
See, now the split hooves totally threw me for a second. I’m so used to picturing a unicorn as a white horse with a horn that I picture unicorns with a horse’s hooves. My first thought on seeing the sketch was “half-unicorn/half-cow?” But given the above commenter’s statement, it makes a little more sense.
Annatar Says:
Want to amend the final sentence above to add “to me”. I just realized I sounded like the typical internet commenter being uber-critical. I was only trying to express my own initial confusion. So my apologies if anyone takes offense.
Trivial Says:
Now, if you want to see grown-ups dressed as unicorns, try BroNYcon.

My Little Pony: Pillaging is magic!
thecrunchyfrog Says:
Yay! That was for me. You see, the pirate = unicorn thing happened gradually as we worked on the wedding decorations. At first she understood that pirates were pirates (I think?) and would run around the house yelling “Arrrr”. But over time, I’d ask her what a pirate was and she would show me her stuffed unicorn and say “This is a pirate” and then she started referring to a unicorn wedding…it just degraded from there.
Foxfier Says:
FWIW, I saw the deer-hooves before I saw the horn and identified it as “A unicorn 18th century high rank sailor…thing.” (No, not in so many words, just an impulse notion.)
I started reading of the adorable story and my husband looked over, saw the picture, and said: “My little pony meets pirates of the Caribbean? Awesome. Also strange, but good drawing.”
Little kids are really odd about how they make connections, I’ve learned! (Two year old at home.)
jdreyfuss Says:
So if a unicorn has cloven hooves does that mean it would be kosher, even though horses aren’t?
katem Says:
*chuckles* That would depend on whether or not a unicorn ruminates.
KenderBryant Says:
When I first saw this, I immediately thought of the 5th Gen of Pokemon. I’m talking about Keldeo. Not 100% sure why, but there you have it.
Harrow Says:
I heartily approve of your butterfly horses. How many platinum pieces for one?
MunchWolf Says:
Still wondering where the ninja comes in …
