Goggies
Goggies

Dogs are wonderful for doing warm-up sketches, since they come in *so many* shapes and sizes. Some have short, squashed faces with tons of little folds and wrinkles, others have long, almost anteater-like snouts that you can exaggerate for comedic effect. And even dogs of the same breed can have different ways of being drawn – you can see at the bottom where I started to riff on different pitbulls.

In fact, the only other thing I draw more often for my warm-up sketches are dinosaurs, because, come on, dinosaurs.

So what’s your favorite breed? Mine is the Siberian Husky. I also like the Malamute which is similar. Labs and beagles are good, as are corgis and dalmations. I also like German Shepherds.

German Sheppards crossed with Rottweilers are the best. Thanks for the awesome sketches of cute doggies, it’s made my day :)! (Also, is there such a thing as a non-psychotic Chihuahua? It’s hilarious :P)

My favorite breeds in person, so to speak, are labs & retrievers. They’re just super friendly, easy-going dogs. But my favorite dogs to *draw* are all of the really interesting looking ones – pugs, shar peis, pomeranians, bulldogs, yes, but also afghans, komondors, chinese crested… The list goes on!!

I personally prefer mutts, especially ones from the shelter. Too many of the pure breeds in North America have been inbred to the point of genetic illness.

I do quite enjoy the spastic Chihuahua. BUt you need to draw a Shar-Pei sometime. In a rocking chair…..knitting….a sweater…cause they remind people of grandmothers.

  6. Oh yeah, that Chihuahua is really great! I’m not much of a dog person though. Unless its a puppy, I don’t really give in to dogs much.

I saw a husky/shepherd mix puppy at my local Ren Fest once. It was SOOOOOOO adorable. The light gray and brown with white coloring made it look even MORE like a wolf. I loved watching it try to get off it’s leash. I want one! I was sooooo tempted to dognap that puppy (I wouldn’t have really, but…. you know).

@xero: I DID mention corgis as one of my fave breeds. The reason: Cobwboy Bebop. What do you think of a small white dog (no idea what breed) with a black mask around the eyes named Bandit?

Vogon Poetry: I feel your pain, man.

My 2nd girlfriend was a music teacher. She had me listen to some “experimental” violin music one night. I play the violin better that the person who was evoking that “noise”. And by “better” I mean I, who have NEVER PLAYED THE VIOLIN IN MY LIFE, could have created better violin music than that.

Dejected, defeated Dustin dreads dreary death doggerel. Say that five times quickly. Also: I love Dustin’s cringing expression!

Hah! My family does something like this when we play Apples to Apples, though it’s not nearly this bad. The game sort of limits you with its selection. And yes, it’s the most mild-mannered people who have the most sick, sick minds!
