Drawing Backgrounds
Drawing Backgrounds

When I first started this comic, (wow, 6 years ago now) I’d never really drawn any backgrounds before, being more interested in and more comfortable with drawing characters. But, I promised myself that I’d at least *try* to draw backgrounds, because if you don’t practice, you never get any better.

Now, I’m a lot more comfortable with backgrounds (even if I don’t go crazy elaborate all the time due to time restrictions), and it’s actually a lot of fun to be able to cut loose and draw big exterior scenes like the mall or a downtown street. (Drawing the spooky theatre for last year’s Halloween story was especially fun!)

That new skill has crossed over into my ‘just for fun’ art, too. This is a sketch of the bridge of my Serenity RPG character’s ship, the Devil’s Due. When I drew it, I thought I’d added enough debris and tchotchkes laying around and cluttering things up, but in retrospect, I totally could have gone further. I do quite like the happy face sticker she’s put over her muscle man poster – that’s pretty in character. 🙂

Spaceship engineer mistake #1: putting a “do not touch” sign on something that should not be touched. Everyone who passes by: “challenge accepted!” I’m also pretty sure fuzzy dice are illegal under Alliance laws, punishable by death.

Except the Do not touch panel is a deathtrap. people who tought the DNTs must die. Real DNTs will be behind closed panel fake DNTs help cull redshirts.

  4. wow, very nice. I’m still struggling a little with backgrounds, but I enjoy doing them. And as you said, you need to do them if you want to get any better.

    Cool 🙂

Never really found a good Firefly RP anywhere here sadly 🙁
Though I do have a character I created in a sci-fi MUD who has a spaceship with fuzzy dice and debris everywhere too 🙂
The interior looks a bit more “scrappy” though.
(Possibly because the entire ship is literally built out of scrap parts of other ships. Same way my RL computer is built out of scrap parts of other computers ‘cos I can’t afford new parts!)

Anyways, spaceships are fun! Nuff said! 🙂

Every spaceship needs cup holders. I found the random sock and bag of chips, but I’m still looking for the half eaten sandwich. 😉

Slight quibble: no matter how informal the environment, a spacer will always allow for possible changes in gravity and acceleration. At the very least, the wrench and boots would be secured.
