Putting the RP in “Mono(r)poly”
Putting the RP in “Mono(r)poly”

I love, love, LOVE that Lar deSouza (of Least I Could Do and Looking For Group fame) managed to work a joke about Monopoly into this comic! It’s not something I would have had the guts to take on, but I spent MANY an hour growing up playing (and arguing about!) this game with my family. No one ever won – we’d almost always get distracted by dinner or bedtimes or screaming younger siblings before we finished a game, but maybe that’s why we kept playing it – in the hopes that one day, we’d actually breeze through a game and have a conclusion.

Also, how amazing does Joel look as Uncle Pennybags? GOSH, and Dustin in his vagabond getup!! PRICELESS!!! I <3 this strip so much!

Hmm…I suspect Joel is the top hat, Sarah is the little dog & Mark is the racecar (or the “man on horseback”). Not sure which pieces Dustin & Abbie are using – maybe the thimble, old shoe or iron. (there used to be a purse, but that hasn’t been in any sets since 1991)

The problem with Monopoly is that no one ever plays it by the rules. Monopoly as everyone knows it is a hodgepodge of house rules that have somehow become canon over the years, which drastically increase the luck factor of the game and increase the playing time considerably.

Also, I’m a little put off by how off-model chubby and masculine he made Sarah. She looks plumper than Dustin here, enough so that it’s all I can see in the last panel.

Our Monopoly set includes rules for fast play that boil down to “Set X time limit, richest person wins.”

There’s also The Farming Game, which is Monopoly in rural Washington.

don’t put money on free parking and the game goes A HELL OF A LOT FASTER

ppl don’t seem to get the point is to force your opponents to run out of money

though the version with the credit card mashine and setting a turn/time limit helps too

However, if you play it by the actual rules, then it’s not as fun as the insanity that it usually is. The point of the game now is how long it is and how soul crushing it is.

All very well, but when I try, I really can’t get into the mindset of my character. How on earth am I supposed to roleplay a shoe?
