@Davison; the advice was explicitly for Mark to do some research, and for him to talk to Dustin.

It’s surprising how invested and self projecting I can be with these characters, but I agree with Davison. Maybe Dustin would be “okay” just to not loose her.

At least the geeks I know, no matter how weird we can be with certain stuff, we don’t practice polyamory. I guess that for us is a cultural thing that hasn’t permeated well with local customs.

The question I asked when Rav first dropped this little bomb (‘You say that ‘everyone knows.’ Does this include Dustin, YOUR FREAKIN’ BOYFRIEND?’) has yet to be answered. Honestly, i’m suspecting he doesn’t…

    This… Will not end well…

As for Dustin knowing… I think the “do some research and talk to Dustin” is a pretty clear indication of just that.. That he knows.

Now… Unless Mark has some hidden dept of maturity in him this will end in a flaming wreck of a disaster. Based on real life experience i think Ravenna is more in to Mark for the “thrill”. He is a cute little taffy to nibble on for a little while. But i think he would drive her up a wall if they spent any lengthy time together.

Now what makes me confused is why so many think that this is being done behind Dustins back..? In fact if we go back to the first reveal it would only make sense if A: Dustin knows B: She assumed that he talked openly about it with his new friend. And since it seems that they are not having any satellites (extra partners.. what Mark will become in essence) at the moment their relationship works like any mono-ship. As for why it does not come up more often… How often do you ask your mono friends about the intricate deta<ls of their relationship..? =)

Yeah, agreed with Tawess. To me it sounds like Dustin knows and is fine with it, but Mark may not know how to handle not being in a normative, romantic-comedy/sitcom-appropriate relationship.

Sounds like a lot of people are making the standard assumptions about both polyamory and overweight geeks:
1: That polyamory is basically fancy-speak for cheating, and
2: that overweight geeks will submit to any coercion in order to stay in a relationship.

Yeah, I find it quite weird that people think it were done behind Dustin’s back with such a clear indication that it wasn’t. And about ending well? Someone might have mentioned to Mark that “she’s not off limits” DOES NOT MEAN “she’ll have a mono relationship with you”. He seems to be the type to require lots and lots of elaboration. 🙂

Well, from my part of things it’s because I have been in a situation where my partner was telling others that we were open and I was unaware of it. I don’t think it’s likely, but personal experience has made me not rule it out until they actually talk.

Plus, in the healthy Poly relationships I’ve been a part of the people are usually ok’d by both parties before anything happens, and I feel like Dustin would have said “this will require explanation” right away. So in my mind either that’s a contrivance for the purpose of comedy or the story is going towards the darker places of Poly relationships like it went to the darker places of relationships in LARPing.

Plus like others have said I’ve seen situations where one party is NOT cool with things but will agree in order to hold on to the relationship. Even if he IS cool with things he might not be cool with the other person being his friend. I’ve seen a night of drinks and discussion being required when it’s something that close, otherwise it can risk the friendship.

  14. Almarath Says:

And here we continue to see people who think that polyamory can’t be a healthy relationship without both people involved together in a sexual sense. With the way Rav and Dustin have been together, I have a feeling they are both cool with it and have talked over their boundaries. Dustin is “desperate”? Wow. “Talk to Dustin” … did you all miss that part?

  15. Belgarath Says:

The issue is what kind of relationship Mark and Dustin want with Ravenia and with each other. It’s perfectly fine if everyone knows their boundaries and has their needs fulfilled (which requires communication Mark!). But Dustin, while probably aware of Ravenia’s poly-ness, also seemed a bit concerned with her attraction to Mark on that night when she kissed him: http://www.weregeek.com/2015/02/26/

Just because Ravenia is comfortably poly doesn’t mean Dustin or Mark are, or will be, mature enough to handle it without hurting themselves or each other.

Dustin knows, the club peeps know.

And oh man, Mark has TFW you think you’re making a mess of a social situation but find out actually everything is A-OKAY annnnnd that someone likes you. He could do nothing at this point and go home happy.

Guess what? Being in a happier state of mind will leave him better equiped for talking things out with Sarah too. Everyone wins.

I’ve got TFW fictional characters seem to be making good choices. It can’t last though, conflict makes for a good story -_-

My concern is that Dustin might not be polyamorous. Polymory is great but it only works if all parties involved are on board. And when it comes down to it, if Dustin isn’t in the know then all this is is cheating masquerading as Poly.

I think this’ll be awesome… I’ve yet to see satellites and similar shown in our culture, despite how common I’ve seen it to be. I think it’ll be a good fit for Mark for a while, so that he can pursue a relationship without needing sex, if nothing else. I’ve seen such as a common method of “cooling off”, so that people don’t jump into a bad relationship because it’s been months since they’ve been laid…

Oh how glorious this strip is. I love the “Yeah… slow down there, champ, one thing at a time” tone of this strip, as well. I love how Weregeek has treated Mark as a complete Mundane, and yet never shooed him away. I wish more shops were like that, heh.

I dont always read comments sections.
But when I do, I feel compelled to correct all the wrong.

And I failed my will save. So here is both barrels for all of ya

Hook up with Sarah? Why would she do that? She was trying to expand her horizons a bit and make friends out side of gamer/gothy/geeks at her knitting group. Now that entire group of people believe her to be a man stealing bitch of the worst kind because her “in-character” luv letters were written down, sent and responded to. Was that really just in character? Maybe they are lying to themselves. And maybe not. They both lost friends because of it. And that hurt. Acting on any “connection” that was made would only prove that their friends they hurt were right to feel betrayed. And make THEM the cheating bad guys. Its easier to give each other space. Until that “space” becomes teh new normal for them both and then the ship has sailed. Now it is possible that all it takes for Sarah or Mark to flip that stance is some one else showing an strong interest interest in the other. But that may require some directness that both tend to avoid.

Also this whole “OMG Dustin cant possibly be cool with this because i am not cool with this” needs to calm the fuck down. Your projecting again.

One. we dont even know what (if anything) he has had to say (or think) about the whole thing except for that time he Rav both said out loud just how appealing Mark can in theory be. Dustin was gonna drive him home that first night at the club after Ravenia gave his dance moves a spin. Who knows what conversation may have happened. (most likely Marc would have had head asplode because funny. or just ran out the car the first time it came to a stop. Or not. Its mark)

Instead Marc just ran away from the whole thing screaming. And avoided everyone involved. so he went to get his drink on and get help from the bartender. (because that is what you do) and forgot the part where Ravenia said she practically lives at the club.

Speaking of her. We arent entirely sure of her motivations either.
She likes males that are insightful. And good dancers. and cute. She is poly. So why try to find all that in one? Two guys with Two out of three aint bad. Dustin is probably relieved that he doesnt have to dance, dance, dance to the point of exhaustion every club night of the week. (not sayin he could do with out the exercise but hey self improvement aint easy)

And for all we know Dustin and Ravenia are just trying to get Mark’s self confidence back up. With out help from booze.

I think I finally put my finger on what’s bothered me the most about this arc (and previous dramatic ones) – the fact that Mark is basically a living cartoon character. The comic addresses a number of subjects through its arcs that are sometimes happy and lighthearted, sometimes serious and down, and I feel like most of the cast operates within the borders of human emotion. Even Abby’s insanity largely reminds me of an overly hyperactive kid. It’s like the comic is a sine wave and the cast all operate within the boundaries of its peaks and valleys…except Mark. Mark is so far past the limits of the wave that he’s on his own chart half the time and it jars me out of the story every time he metamorphs from a clueless-yet-relatable funcitonal adult into Bugs Bunny. I know it’s all done for humor, but more and more it just feels forced in relation to the rest of the story and the themes that have been developed.

Being poly isn’t a geek thing; it’s a people thing, so maybe you don’t see it with your geek friends but possibly in another group of friends it’s more common. I don’t know. But it’s likely Dustin knows full well. I’m less interested in his reaction (because I think it’s really clear he knows) and more interested in Katie’s reaction.

As Belgarath already pointed out, there was the scene where Ravenia and Dustin both we blushing from the awkwardness of both having said that Mark was hot!
I totally imagine that a conversation between them happened off-screen just after, where Ravenia actually had a serious conversation with Dustin about her being Poly and specifically about Mark. Because if you notice, the first kiss Ravenia gave Mark was shortly after the Mark-is-hot-awkward. So I think that not only does Dustin know she is Poly, but Ravenia even told her she would go after Mark, BEFORE kissing him. Of course I don’t know because it would have happened off-screen. (and it happened off-screen, because if we readers would have known, it would have remoed 70% of the drama-tension of this story-arc.)

Given Mark’s continued displays of naivete and catastrophic social awkwardness, I’m gonna go ahead and say he’s not mature enough to deal with this kind of situation and it’s another drama bomb waiting to go off. Dustin seems one of the most centered and well balanced characters when it comes to emotional stuff outside of his sometimes flights of fancy when it comes to romance, etc.

If he didn’t want to be in a non-exclusive relationship with Ravenia, I’m sure he would have just said he wasn’t interested. The puppy love phase seems like its still going on, but the implications that any guy who isn’t a stereotypical 7-10 can’t be with a woman without worrying about their own identity within the nerd subculture is kinda dumb.

Alright, chances of anyone reading and caring diminishing. However if Ravena is really poly (which I really hope she is, since we could use some positive representation) then Dustin WILL know. Polyamory is defined by those within it as ethical non-monogamy, which means that 1) we’re honest with the people involved 2) we do our best to keep people from getting hurt.

And for the “there’s no poly geeks” thing, I invite you to hang out with my gaming group someday. We’re made up of a poly unicorn triad, a guy who’s in V poly, and two other people who are dating, one leg of a v triad and looking for more. And a couple of terminally single guys, one of which is probably ace.

Maybe I’m on the other end of the sheltered spectrum, but I’m starting to see ethical non-monogamy turn up more and more among people my age (late 20-somethings). Free love is back in, baby.

Naturally this leads to drama because she wants to give their relationship another try but Mark is either happy with things and shoots her down or he starts going out with Jess again but she promptly puts the kibosh on the whole poly relationship thing because she sees it as him cheating on her all over again (which is ironic because he didn’t cheat on her in the first place.

.@Anna Your right but so am I.
Because Sarah was trying to have her cake and eat it too. And it blew up anyway. So she feels bad about the whole thing. (rightly so)
That is why I dont see Sarah trying to start this up again. If she did so it would force her to confront her original ulterior motives.
That lack of being comfortable with each other Is going to be the new norm for them. Why date that at all?
So that is why i think the ship has sailed. Sad. But sometimes that is life.

That being said; it isnt impossible (it happens in Rom-Com’s ALL the Time) for Sarah or Mark to see the other in a new relationship and “all of a sudden realize how they have felt all along” And feel that they have the right to destroy that new relationship or even go so far as to barge into a wedding because they loved the other first. Because its sooo Romantic. (this is just a comic after all. only based on real life)

But when that shit happens in front of you for real someone winds up needing therapy. Possibly medication. And definitely a restraining order.

Ravenia and Dustin’s relationship never really made any sense to me. It’s a completely unrealistic pairing that would never actually happen in real life. At least Mark is somewhat attractive, but he’s such a derp I can’t see this being anything more than a 1-month fling at most.

In reality, fat people are not attractive. I know this for a fact from personal experience. People can be attracted to different body types, but that’s not the same thing. Larger men can be attractive, but those men aren’t fat. Part of being fat, instead of just large, is the unattractiveness.

Dustin has other qualities, but it doesn’t matter, beause you can find those qualities in other people that aren’t fat. It’s simple. You don’t drink urine when you have clean water and you don’t date fat if there are other options available.

  55. I’ve seen a couple comments about “i’m a geek and I’ve never heard of a geek who was poly.”

So. I’m a geek, and I’m poly. My long term partner is a geek and poly. My partner’s girlfriend is a poly geek. My best poly friend and I trade geek jokes all the time, and the one poly convention I went to was full of Green Lantern t-shirts, steampunk costumes, and programmers discussing how to code a poly calendar app. So yeah, just cause you ain’t seen us doesn’t mean we ain’t here. ANd just because you don’t know any poly geeks doesn’t mean Dustin can’t be one.

And for the folks thinking Dustin is desperate to hold onto Ravennia…OMFG can you drop the desperate geek stereotype already? Dustin is not living in his mom’s basement lusting after the hot girls he thinks will never even look at him. He was uncertain with Ravennia at first, but overall he is confident, sel- assured, and not afraid to stand up for what he believes. I don’t blame Ravennia for snatching hi up when she got the chance, and if I met a real-life version of him, you can bet I’d be asking him out.

  56. @Mar-duk speak for yourself. How attractive a person is has way more to do with how they present themselves, their style and their attitude than how fat they are. I’ve know and dated some seriously attractive fat people. Comparing dating a fat person to drinking urine is disgusting. I promise if the choice were dating someone who thinks like you do and a fat person, I’d take the fat person any day. Cause no amount of “qualities” can make up for that kind of unattractiveness.

    Posted May 31st, 2015 at 11:04 am
  57. Mar-Duck Says:

A person can NOT be both fat and attractive. I’ve lived this truth every day of my life. There is a point when a person becomes large and grotesque enough that people can not be physically attracted to them. If a person is under that threshold, I don’t consider them fat. Society is too quick to apply the label of fat to people who are simply large, but otherwise fine. Even people who are obese, as defined by a percentage of body weight, often aren’t truly fat.

But once someone goes up to over 50% (like myself, who is at ~60% body fat) things change. Just like how I can’t run or walk up stairs without significant effort or how people at that size start becoming diabetic, they stop being attractive. Even if I did have some kind of positive personality trait that people would consider attractive, it wouldn’t matter.
