Don’t know if it’s done anywhere else, but these kind of situations are precisely why the larp circles in my country have began to recruit a “support and safety person” into their larps. It is almost always another larper, but who is not an official game master, or a player in the game they are recruited into. They are there is there to help the GM (and the players) out by staying in the OOC room in case somebody needs an ear. Basically, if a player gets overwhelmed, off-game things bleed into in-game or vise versa, something bad happens etc. and the player is hesitant to go to the GMs for whatever reason, they can talk to the safety person. Safety person can provide a nonjudgmental ear, emotional support, advice, or they might bring the player’s concern to the GM’s attention while the player can stay anonymous, if they wish.

Obviously GMs are also there for things like that. But some new and/or shy players might not want to bother them in the middle of the game or might be hesitant if a more veteran player is the one who offended them. Having a third party to go to takes the pressure off and gives the GM more room for taking care of any in-game things while also providing more people for the players to go to.

I think there are different forms of the “glare” like I think I picked mine up from my dad who was a CPO in the Navy before he retired.

So they run Mark off into the locker room. He sulks. Then he takes an Uber home. “Where’s Mark?” Nobody knows… because running your moody friend off site to get him away from you works so frigging well.

I have a very confused opinion about Ravenna right now.

For starters she should have known that this was not the right environment to introduce her primary in. The initial meeting should have been someplace casual, neutral, comfortable and free of any external social expectations or social obligations. A coffee shop, a McDonalds, a mostly empty park. Some place that gives a person time to process the relationship.

On the other hand I feel sweet pity for Ravenna. She naively assumed that either Mark was more ready for the encounter or more comfortable with polyamory than he is. She clearly has an adorable blindspot for Mark that denotes a sincere fondness and maybe even love of him. She is so eager to carve out a spot for him in her life that she has not stopped to think if Mark will actually want or be ready for that spot.

But on the other hand, I am pissed at Ravenna’s naivete. Either she has had the supreme fortune to never stepped on a land mine (or at least very few) while engaging polyamory, or she is willfully naive because she feels a sense of entitlement that others adjust to her romantic expectations. Such naivete feels unjustified because she should have had personal experience or known that she was going into uncharged waters. She should have known better. She should not have used this suboptimal environment as place to test Mark.

All I know is that if Ravenna gets mad at Mark for not being mature enough, I will hate the character.

For some reason the Teacher Stare in the third panel reminds me of various Studio Ghibli movie moms.

I feel bad for Mark because he does need to take some time away from this and it isn’t helping. By the same rank, I don’t know if this was the best way to do it. Mostly because it can now easily become him feeling hostile and frustrated with people who were genuinely trying to help him instead of trying to deal with the issue. And yes, I know he wasn’t trying to deal with the issue himself
