2020 – The Year of Big Changes

January 16, 2020

Happy New Year, everyone!! I hope you have all had a wonderful holiday, and rung in the new year and the new decade. The last decade has been many things – there have been a lot of ups, and quite a few downs. It’s been, overall, quite stressful, but it’s also had moments of sublime joy. But it is FINALLY over, and we’re now on to 2020 – the most cyberpunk of years!

I have a big announcement to make, one that I’ve been building towards for several months. 2020 will be the last year of Weregeek, and the first year of a brand new comic that I will be talking a lot more about as time goes on. (My Patrons may have already seen a bunch of concept art for it!)

Weregeek started in 2007, and I had only intended to “mess around with it for a few years”- HAH! I imagined it as a way to practice my writing and drawing in a gag-a-day format before moving on to something else. However, I very quickly grew to love the cast and their stories, and to cherish and appreciate the responses I got from all of you, my wonderful readers. So many of you seemed to relate to this group of friends and their games, and to see themselves in the characters, which isn’t surprising, since I can see bits of myself in each of them as well. Mark, Sarah, Joel, Abbie, and Dustin are archetypes as much as they are people, and we have all met at least a few personalities like theirs in our games, or at conventions.

This decision has been a long time coming. The ending of the First Chronicle was supposed to be the original end of the comic, and I had it in mind pretty much from the beginning. However, at that time, I felt like there were still so many stories to explore with the cast, and I wasn’t ready to put things to bed just yet. As some of you have commented on, the Second Chronicle has had a greater focus on the character’s out-of-game lives, and we’ve explored their friendships and flaws, their triumphs and their failures. Mark is now on a journey to start confronting some of his biggest flaws, and his friends are there with him along the way. I feel like now we’re ready to wrap up this chapter of their lives, and maybe even look ahead to see where they end up.

But don’t worry – we’ve still got a few chapters left, and I have an ending in mind that I think will be both heartwarming and satisfying. After all, much like the games we play, the story never truly ends. We know, in that part of our minds that turns our DM’s descriptions into an entire world, and our characters into beloved friends whose actions can surprise even us, that the characters we know and love will continue on with their lives after we’re no longer watching them.

Thank you all so much for reading, this next chapter is going to be a big one. I hope you all have a great 2020 and I’m looking forward to what will come next!
